I really like the AR platform, for what it's worth. They're not good for conceal carry, of course, but otherwise they're good for most applications -- home defense, hunting, etc.. What they lack in being the best at any one thing, they more than make up for in flexibility. They also have the advantage of not requiring a lot of training or practice to attain and maintain reasonable proficiency, though I definitely recommend taking a class for general safety and usage training. Most ranges have something like that.
It doesn't hurt that .223/5.56mm is second only to 9mm in near universal availability even in ammo droughts.
